Patellofemoral joint pain. Is it the patella or the femur?

This is a VERY interesting paper and one that has significant implications for the podiatric contribution to the management of patellofemoral pain, especially with respect orthotic therapy.

The paper is entitled

Femur Rotation and Patellofemoral Joint Kinematics: A Weight-Bearing Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis , Souza et al

and it is from almost 10 years ago J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2010;40(5):277-28

But the key point here is that this paper completely changed how we think about the segment contribution to PFP.

Previously we had assumed the issue was due to lateral patella rotation, however, this MRI study established it was in fact due to excessive medial femoral rotation.

This study concluded that

the control of femur rotation may be important in restoring normal patellofemoral joint kinematics
